The 24-year-old was charged with misconduct on July 23, after it was alleged he breached FA Rule E1 (b) by placing 2,248 bets between April 30, 2019 and July 4, 2023.

The offences predated his spell at Walsall, which started in January 2024 when he signed from then National League North side Tamworth for an undisclosed fee.

Jellis attended a hearing last week and has been imposed with a five-month suspension from "all football and football-related activity, which is suspended for 12 months".

“An Independent Regulatory Commission has sanctioned Walsall's Jamie Jellis for misconduct in relation to breaches of the FA's betting rules,” read an FA statement.

"The Regulatory Commission imposed a five-month suspension from all football and football-related activity, which is suspended for 12 months, a £1,200 fine and warning after a hearing."

Jellis, who the FA confirmed subsequently admitted the charge, has played while the investigation was ongoing, featuring seven times for Walsall in all competitions this season - registering one assist.

A club statement read: “We would like to thank the PFA for their support of Jamie and the club during this process.

"The club will make no further comment on this matter."

In his 20 months at Walsall, Jellis has made 64 appearances in total - scoring seven goals and setting up three more.

The former non-league star has missed the previous two wins against Shrewsbury Town in the EFL Trophy and Chesterfield in League Two due to a groin issue.

Jellis trained at Essington on Thursday and will be "fighting to be fit" ahead of the Saddlers' trip to Fleetwood Town on Saturday.

Elsewhere, Mat Sadler missed out on the League Two manager of the month award for August, after Gillingham boss Gareth Ainsworth was presented with the award.
