Aston Villa to assess star after injury scare
Villa will assess Matty Cash after the right-back suffered an injury while on international duty.
Cash scored for the second time in the space of four days for Poland to set them on their way to a 3-1 World Cup qualifying win over Finland.
But the 28-year-old then had to come off at half-time after suffering what boss Jan Urban described as a “severe bruise” to his thigh following a challenge by Finland defender Jere Uronen.
Cash had wanted to continue but was convinced to come off by his manager, who said: “I substituted him at half-time, and I think it was a good decision, both mine and his, as he agreed to be substituted and wasn’t stubborn about continuing to play.
“He wouldn’t have lasted much longer. I’ve had injuries like that myself. It’s only a matter of time before you can’t run anymore.”
Cash will now return to Bodymoor Heath for assessment by Villa’s medical staff.
Unai Emery’s team are next in action when they travel to Everton on Saturday, aiming to kickstart their season after a disappointing opening month which saw them take just one point from their first three Premier League fixtures.
Midfielder Boubacar Kamara is also being checked as he looks to return from the hamstring injury suffered in a 1-0 defeat at Brentford. Villa were also without Amadou Onana for the 3-0 defeat to Crystal Palace immediately prior to the international break, also due to a hamstring injury.
