Big Mick looks Bang On for a landmark victory at Monmore

Monmore trainer Nathan Hunt insists Bang On Big Mick is ‘in the form of his life’ as he looks to register a landmark victory tonight.

Hunt and his Trinity Greyhounds team have been in fine fettle as of late, with four of his greyhounds winning Open races at Monmore last weekend in Whisky Elsa, Bang On Edith, Cunnigar Yousir and Newinn Oscar.

One of his brightest stars has been Bang On Big Mick, who goes in the Ladbrokes.com 480 Maiden at 8.13pm this evening.

The March ’23 dog goes into the race having won four successive graded races in succession over the standard trip and while this represents a sizable step up in class, Hunt is hopeful of making it five in a row.

“He’s in the form of his life,” said Hunt. “Sadly the four out of five wins (a fourth-place finish over 630m sandwiched between his 480m successes) have crossed over two months, so he wouldn’t get the Dog of the Month accolade, but he’s done us proud nonetheless and deserves his chance in a maiden open now.

“He’s home-bred by us out of Oaks winner, Wuheida. He’s a strong running dog and has won back-to-back S2 races previously, although the 630m trip is a touch far for him. I think he’s good enough to win a maiden 575m at Romford down the line.

“His rich vein of form has coincided with the kennels' form picking up considerably after kennel cough knocked us back massively over the summer.

“It’s been lovely to see everyone’s hard work paying off now with the kennel on fire just recently landing four opens at Monmore last Saturday. Hopefully, the strong spell continues.”

Hunt has several runners as Monmore hosts six Opens as part of tonight’s 12-race programme.

The first of the Opens is at 7.22pm, the Ladbrokes.com 264 Maiden and Hunt’s Wychwood Rose is by far the most experienced.

The Ladbrokes.com 480 Division Two sees Patoka look to add to his stunning record so far this year for Brian Thompson. Chris Fereday’s Thor Odinson is a classy operator, too, but has impressed over greater distances in recent times.

Mark Russell’s Full Notice, a stunning blue dog, goes for glory in the Ladbrokes.com 630 Maiden while Newinn Bachelor looks to win on a second Saturday night on the spin for Kim Billingham-Hine in the Ladbrokes.com 264.Richie Taberner’s Aero Advocate returns to four-bend action in the Ladbrokes.com 480 Division One after an Open triumph over 630m last time out.
