Birmingham Brummies bid farewell to Perry Barr Stadium leaving no speedway in West Midlands

Birmingham Brummies speedway chief Nigel Tolley has thanked everyone for packing out Perry Barr Stadium as the club said farewell to racing in the Second City - and the West Midlands.

A capacity crowd was present to watch the final laps around the famous venue on what was an emotional night for all involved on Monday.

Tolley said: “It was great to see Perry Barr so busy – it just makes you wonder doesn’t it! I really am grateful for all the volunteers and everyone involved in Birmingham Speedway. We are a big family and I think that’s the best way of describing it.”

Unfortunately, it was another bitterly disappointing display that the home faithful had to endure as the Brummies were easily beaten 58-32 by Midlands neighbours Leicester.

“Leicester were really tough opposition,” Tolley said. “They’ve come on leaps and bounds and they fully deserved their victory.

“They outclassed us pretty much from start to finish and it goes without saying that it was nowhere near the final we result we wanted Brummies to have here at Perry Barr.

"I can only apologise for some of the performances this year, especially this one.”

The Brummies’ final fixture sees them travel to Leicester’s Hydroscand Arena tomorrow (7.30pm).

The demise of the Brummies spells the end of speedway in the West Midlands after Cradley Heathens stopped racing in 2019 and Wolverhampton Wolves in 2023.

Wolves had pinned hopes on building a new motorsport venue near the city but no plans have yet come to fruition.
