In-form Grimsby Town hailed as 'mentality monsters' ahead of Walsall trip

Grimsby Town boss David Artell described his team as "mentality monsters" after their 2-1 win against Newport County at Blundell Park on Saturday.

The Mariners maintained their unbeaten start in League Two after Kieran Green's 94th-minute winner lifted them to fourth in the embryonic league table.

Artell's charges also scored twice in the final 10 minutes to come from two goals behind in their last road trip at Harrogate Town.

And that never-say-die attitude is a trait which has pleased Artell in the opening weeks of the new season, as he prepares for a trip to Walsall this evening.

Grimsby are 'mentality monsters'

"It's not the first time we've scored late on and Jurgen Klopp used to call it mentality monsters," Artell told BBC Humberside.

"That's a big part of it. The belief, the mentality to keep on going. We changed a few things as the game went on but that gave them more belief.

"In the end, we got our rewards. So it was pleasing but plenty still to work on."

Match-winner Green received especially high-praise from his boss, who he feels typifies what it means to be a Grimsby player.

"If you could typify a current Grimsby Town player then you would probably say that he's the model for it," he continued.

"He's all-action, never-say-die, decent levels of skill and unwavering belief in what we do as a team and what he can bring to the party."

Sam Lavelle injury blow

Defender Sam Lavelle was forced off in a 3-1 win over Shrewsbury Town in the League Cup last week and was not involved on the weekend.

Artell has confirmed that he has suffered a calf injury and won't be involved against Walsall.

"He has hurt his calf so he's going to be out for a few weeks. He has had a scan so a bit of a blow but he'll back back soon enough," he added.
