Walsall took an early lead when Connor Barrett swept a low cutback from Charlie Lakin past Barnet goalkeeper Cieran Slicker.

Aaron Pressley opened his goal scoring account for the club with Walsall's second in the 22nd minute when he was left unmarked to stab Mason Hancock's free-kick delivery into the far corner.

Ollie Hawkins halved the deficit for the Bees just before half-time when he headed home Anthony Hartigan's corner delivery from close-range, which made for a very different second half.

"We turned it into a game that it didn't need to be. Firstly, we started brilliantly in the way that we thought we would hurt them on the transition," Sadler said.

"It was a fantastically worked goal. Charlie [Lakin] did brilliantly and then Connor [Barrett] got into the positions that we want him to be getting into.

"The only criticism from that first half was we were maybe a little bit too casual when we got ourselves into really good place.
