Mat Sadler says Walsall youngster Ronan Maher is "knocking at the door" after impressing on his first start of the season at Stoke City on Tuesday.

The 20-year-old played just over an hour during the Saddlers' goalless draw against Championship outfit Stoke, as they bowed out of the League Cup in a 4-3 penalty shoot-out defeat.

Maher, who has had loan spells at Rushall Olympic and Tamworth in the past two seasons, signed a two-year deal with the club earlier this summer.

And Sadler has been pleased with the signs of progression shown by the midfielder, which he feels bodes well for the future.

"I thought Ronan did really well. He's knocking at the door and he wants to play," Sadler said.
