More than 2,000 were in attendance at Keys Park to watch Gavin Hurren’s team continue their impressive start to life back in the Northern Premier League.

After Niall Watson had opened the scoring early in the second half, Elliott Johnson got what proved to be the winner 15 minutes from time, with Dontai Gabidon netting a late consolation for the visitors.

The Pitmen are one of only two teams, along with FC United of Manchester, to win both of their opening fixtures.

Elsewhere, Rushall Olympic got their first victory of the campaign with a comfortable 3-0 triumph at Leek Town.

Anthony Dwyer netted twice for the Pics, either side of Sam Whittall netting his first goal since returning to the club from the penalty spot.

A late goal from Jenson Sumnall earned Stourbridge a 1-1 draw at Quorn to continue their unbeaten start in the Southern League Central Premier.

The Glassboys, trailing to Dennis Digie’s early goal, had looked destined for defeat before Sumnall headed home his first goal for the club with three minutes remaining.

“I didn’t think we were quite at it tonight but the positive is we came away with a point,” said Stour boss Darryl Knights.

“It’s easy to go under when you are losing away from home. But the boys really dug in and grafted for each other.”

Halesowen Town boss Russ Penn revealed how some harsh half-time words helped inspire their 3-1 win over Barwell.

The Yeltz took the lead in the seventh minutes through McKauley Manning but were quickly pegged back, before going on to dominate after the break with Jason Cowley and Kyle Finn scoring the goals.

“There were a few harsh words at half-time, in terms of we need to lift the intensity,” said Penn.

“When we do that we will breeze past anyone and I thought we breezed past them in the second half. The front four were immense. To get four points from the first two games, I’m relatively pleased.”

Chasetown claimed their first win of the season in Northern Premier League West as Ty Webster scored the only goal of a tight contest with Shifnal Town.

Sporting Khalsa were beaten 2-0 at Newcastle Town, Noel Brindle and Luca Whitney scoring for the hosts in the second half.
