Warrington, who joined Walsall on a two-year deal last week, rose through the ranks, and even made his Premier League debut with a late cameo from the bench in a 1-0 win over Sheffield United at Goodison Park in 2024.

While the clock stopped (or at least paused) on his top-flight career at 60 seconds, former youth teammate Dylan Thompson revealed he was always a standout in the academy.

'An aggressive all-round midfielder'

"I remember a few of the tours when we were younger. One of the goals he scored in the UDAN Trophy was out of this world," Thompson recalls.

"It actually came up on Facebook about a couple of weeks ago. He just picked the ball up from about 40 yards out, hit it with pace and it flew into the top corner.

"He could score goals, he could dribble, he could tackle, he could ping a ball. I would say he was just an aggressive all-round midfielder who had everything in his locker.

"I primarily saw him as a No 10, but as he has got older he has maybe moved back into a six or an eight role."

'One of the most dedicated pros'
