The 20-year-old had been at the club since the age of eleven - but earlier this summer he was among the latest round of youngsters to be released at the end of their contracts.

Richards had been highly rated at Albion in the past - and was part of the under 21 side that won the PL Cup back in 2022.

Named academy player of the year that season, he went on to pen a professional contract in early 2023 and was a key part of the club's under 21 side.

However, while others were named in first team squads, Richards was sent out on a series of loans with Stourbridge, Alverchurch and Leamington.

He was at the latter last season - before Albion decided against renewing his contract.

Like other youngsters who have been released, Richards has been looking to land a new deal this summer, and he has done with National League North side Hereford.

Having spent time on trial at Edgar Street, Richards has now made his first permanent step after departing Albion.

Hereford boss and former Birmingham City right back Paul Caddis was delighted to land Richards - and praised his upbringing at the Baggies.

He said: "Matt Richards is a tidy footballer with a great upbringing at West Brom and had 2 successful senior men’s loan spells at Alvechurch and Leamington respectively and he is someone I am pleased to add to our squad.

“Matt will add competition in central midfield but will bring some calmness to our play with his passing and receiving ability in possession. After a successful trial period with us we were fortunate Matt chose to stay with us and continue his development at our club.

"I am looking forward to continuing to work with Matt and seeing him play in front of our supporters.”
