Belle Richards, aged eight, will be among the youngest of 43 athletes who will represent England at the ICO tournament, which takes place in Wales in October.

Competitors from all over the globe are set to descend on Swansea, with Richards expected to compete in five categories.

She was introduced to the sport four years ago by parents Jessica and Chris, after they spotted a post on Facebook.

“We just wanted to get the kids into something, rather than having them stuck on their IPads all day,” said Jessica.

“We are so thrilled for Belle. She really enjoys it, she loves it. We are over the moon for her.”

Richards trains at Seishin Karate Jitsu in Great Wyrley and also attends monthly squad sessions in Redditch at the gym of Karate England president, Dave Treadwell.

It is the first time England has sent a karate team to the world championships and all athletes must self-fund their travel, fees, kit and accommodation.

To show their support, Jessica and Chris have agreed to provide sponsorship from their Dudley-based business, Belles Jewellery Box, with further help coming from Secure Vaults Derby and another Black Country firm, PDR Finishing.

“We really wanted to support the team on this amazing journey and so did the other two companies we approached,” said Chris. “It's our way of saying well done and good luck.”

Treadwell added: “It’s a great honour to represent your country and everyone is working extremely hard at their clubs up and down the country.

“All I can say is a huge thank you to all three sponsors that are supporting the England team.”
