The 35-year-old predominantly wore the armband in the absence of former skipper Donervon Daniels, who has since departed for League Two rivals Oldham Athletic following his release at the end of last season.

Matt, who penned a new one-year deal earlier this summer, made his return from a minor groin issue, as a substitute during the Saddlers' 3-0 win over Forest Green Rovers on Saturday.

New signing Aden Flint captained the team from the start, but Albert Adomah and Brandon Comley have also worn the armband during pre-season.

Jamille Matt will be club captain 'moving forward'

Jamille Matt celebrates his 11th goal of the season.
Jamille Matt captained Walsall in 33 of their 46 league games last term, and also wore the armband in all three League Two play-off fixtures.

Sadler said: "Jamille will 100 per cent be our club captain. You know what I think of Jamille and it goes without saying that he's an incredible person.

"He will without doubt be the club captain and then we'll see as things go on the pitch with different games and how that works out.

"Obviously we saw Aden [wear the armband at Forest Green] and we're very pleased to have his captaincy and leadership.

"We've also got Brandon Comley, Albert Adomah and Charlie Lakin, and some emerging leaders like Connor Barrett, but Jamille will be the club captain moving forward."

Matt netted 12 times for the Saddlers in all competitions last term, but struggled for form during the second half of last season.

The experienced frontman is expected to be relied upon less following the summer arrivals of Bournemouth loanee Jonny Stuttle and Aaron Pressley from Stevenage.

Pressley netted three times over the course of pre-season, while 19-year-old Stuttle has scored twice in as many games.

Meanwhile, Levi Amantchi headed out on loan to National League side Rochdale on a six-month deal last week, with Sadler eager for him to gain minutes away from the club.
