Ryder Cup hero Tyrrell Hatton likened the atmosphere at LIV Golf in Staffordshire to one at a football match with some “interesting shouts”.

Huge crowds followed the Englishmen during his final round at the JCB Golf and Country Club near Uttoxeter on Sunday.

Hatton carded a one-under-par round of 70 to finish tied-fifth for the tournament. But, his Legion XIII claimed the team title, and the 33-year-old earned a share of £3 million.

More than 43,000 fans attended the three-day tournament. Hatton said that he enjoyed playing in front of a home crowd, but revealed that it felt intense.

“It was certainly a fun atmosphere to play in front of,” he said. “It feels like there were more people this year than last year, so that's obviously great that it's growing.

“UK fans definitely create a unique atmosphere, and it kind of felt a bit more like a football crowd to be honest.

“There were some interesting shouts throughout the week, but ultimately it was good to have home support.

“And obviously from my side, I wish I was able to play a bit better, but I tried my best. Obviously, it wasn't my week individually.”

Hatton’s Legion XIII team went back-to-back at JCB, having claimed the team title in Staffordshire last year.

Legion XIII’s Caleb Surratt finished tied-third individually on 13-under-par while last year’s individual champion Jon Rahm finished 10-under, and Tom McKibbin finished on seven-under.

The victory was Rahm and Hatton’s eighth win as part of the team in 25 starts.

Asked about their success in the past two years, Hatton added: “Obviously, that side of it has been great.

“I think certainly this year we have a very strong team, and it's nice that Caleb has been playing better this season. The result this week is great for him to grow in his confidence and prove to himself that he's good enough; he just needs to trust himself more.

“And having Tom on the team, he's a fantastic player and certainly adds a lot of strength to our team.”

LIV Golf will return to JCB Golf and Country Club in Staffordshire next year, between July 24 and 26.
