Staffordshire County League round-up: Hammerwich gain on Milford Hall
Hammerwich gained ground on Staffordshire County League leaders Milford Hall in a rain-affected weekend of cricket.
Callum Brodrick’s second-placed side picked up 20 points as they comfortably beat Wolverhampton Seconds by eight wickets. The skipper won the toss and put the home side into bat, but they were only able to put 135-8 on the board in the 33 overs they had available.
Scott Elstone did most of the damage, taking 4-31 during his spell, and John Jennings picked up 3-46. Ravi Kumar top-scored for Wolverhampton, he made 61 not out from 52 balls.
Hammerwich made light work of the chase as they reached Wolves’ total in 26 overs losing just two wickets. Imran Qadir top scored making 50 not out from 54 balls.
Milford were held to a winning draw at Walsall, and their lead at the top of the division is narrow at just six points.
They batted first and made 170-9 from their 24 overs, with Jordan Bulpitt making 67 from 51 balls. Ramandeep Singh was impressive with the ball for the hosts at Gorway as he took 5-20 from his four overs.
Walsall never looked like chasing the score down, and they crawled to 78-6 from their 24 overs. Chris Dean and Aaron Afford both took three wickets each.
Wombourne secured local bragging rights at the weekend with a win over arch-rivals Beacon.
There is just over a mile between the two clubs, and they played out a low-scoring affair.
Wombourne batted first and were bowled out for 139 in the 36th over. Michael Hill batting at four, made 52 not out from the 72 balls he faced. The next top scorer was Jack Hussey with 40. Jake Cartwright starred with the ball for the home side as he took 6-47.
In reply, Beacon were well in trouble at 10-3 and they were eventually bowled out for 84 with spinner Ben Hudson taking 6-17 after opening the bowling.
Tamworth Seconds got the better of Lichfield in the division’s only other game to not end in a draw. Lichfield were 101-9 from 27 overs as Luke Van Zyl (4-26) and James Cooper (4-22) bowled out the home side.
Batting was a struggle all day, and Tamworth lost seven wickets chasing it down. George Baker top-scored with 31 from 74 balls. Zayn Hussain starred with the ball as he took 4-32.
Cannock did their quest to stay in the league no harm after getting a winning draw against Penkridge. They made 161-6 from their 32 overs after being asked to bat first. Gregory Mahlokwana top-scored with a hard-hitting 46 from 32 balls.
The visitors went for it, but fell just two runs short of the total. Mark Pearse made a swashbuckling 76 not out from 60 balls, which included three fours and six maximums. He was well supported by Amaan Hassan, who made 54. Mahlokwana had a good day with the ball too for Cannock, taking 4-31.
Fordhouses are third in the division, they got a winning draw against Pelsall in the sixth game of the weekend. They made 146-8 from their 30 overs, Pelsall were 36-7 at one stage in reply. They eventually blocked out for a draw.
