The 33-year-old, who is currently on trial with the Saddlers, featured for the final half-hour in a 1-0 win over Aston Villa at Bescot on Wednesday night.

Sawyers, who will turn 34 in November, scored 19 goals and set-up 25 more in 161 appearances for Walsall between 2013 and 2016

According to our recent poll - 91.5 per cent of the 400 that voted would like to see the St Kitts & Nevis international back in Walsall colours next seasons.

Among the many reasons given, the most common reason was due to the experience that he would provide to Mat Sadler's young squad.

Walsall have signed seven players so far this summer, including two off the loan market.

Sadler has recruited players with an average age of 22 and has stated his intentions of bringing in "young athletes" which the club can develop.

Albert Adomah (37), Jamille Matt (35), Sam Hornby (30) and Josh Gordon (30) are currently the only players aged 30 or above in the squad.

Others pointed to the fact that Sawyers could provide Walsall with the quality in the centre of the park that they were lacking during the second half of last season.

However, critics fear some fans might be 'living in the past' and also questioned where he would fit into Sadler's system.

Sawyers replaced Brandon Comley in holding midfield on Tuesday, which is a position he played in Bristol Rovers' 4-1-2-3 system in League One last term.

He traditionally played as a No 10 during his previous spell with the Saddlers before his eventual exit to Brentford in 2016.

Walsall are yet to make a decision on Sawyers, with Sadler likening it to fellow former player Milan Lalkovic's trial in 2023.

The Slovakian attacker, who played with Sawyers at Bescot, was among those in favour of the move.
