Walsall pair Connor Barrett and Jamie Jellis roared on to the scene like a train last season, but ran out of gas towards the end.

In hindsight, it was hardly surprising. Neither had ever played a full season in the Football League and the physical and mental rigours of such a gruelling campaign visibly took its toll.

It was frightening just how seamlessly they initially took to life at Bescot. Barrett, signed from National League side AFC Fylde the previous summer, proved a menace for his opposite man and had the pace and dribbling ability to stretch defences wide open.

He also struck up a telepathic partnership with Jellis, picked up from non-league Tamworth in January 2024, on the right.

Barrett and Jellis' contrasting numbers

24-year-old Jellis contributed to a number of big moments, including most notably, his stunning strikes against Colchester and Grimsby - the latter of which was voted Walsall's goal of the season.
