Strike duo among four signing up again for Wolves Women

Strike duo Amber Hughes and Charlotte Greengrass have committed their future to Wolves Women.

The pair, who battled it out for the Golden Boot in Women’s Premier Division North last season, are among four players returning for next season along with Beth Merrick and Becky Anderson.

None of the quartet are able to commit to a part-time contract but are able to remain part of the squad, thanks to the hybrid model used by Wolves.

“Amber, Beth, Charlotte and Bec Anderson were a huge part of last year,” boss Dan McNamara explained.

“They’ve shown just how much quality they have, and for the four of them, their commitment is going to be a little bit different to the other players within the group.

“Due to their jobs and responsibilities outside of football, being part-time does not work for them, but the hybrid model we use at Wolves allows them to fit football in around their lives.

“For me, the important thing is keeping the players who represent myself and the football club in a brilliant way, and they have done for years, so I’m delighted they have all committed to play for Wolves next season and, again, it shows real intent.”

McNamara, who last week secured the signing of midfielder Amy Sims from Nottingham Forest, says the intention is to add some “real quality” to the squad with further signings expected.

Wolves finished runners-up behind Forest last season but sparked controversy when it emerged the club had not applied for promotion.

A proposed restructure of the women’s game means extra promotion places could be available next season and McNamara, who committed his own future to the club earlier in the summer, has been assured the team will be in the best possible shape to fight for those positions.

He continued: “I hope that’s going to now show the intent and the ambition of the club next season, and hopefully we can tie down another few targets that we’ve got in mind who can add to a really exciting group.

“We want to add some real quality, but we don’t just want to bring anyone in, we want to bring in the right people, the right characters, to make sure that we’re all striving in the right direction, because as a group we feel we can really push on again next season and go all the way.”
