Walsall closing in on swoop for League One striker
Walsall are set to beef their frontline with the capture of Stevenage striker Aaron Pressley.
Former Villa and Brentford striker Pressley, 23, is reported to be closing in on a move to Bescot Stadium.
The rangy Scottish frontman, who stands at 6ft 4ins, has been given the green light to exit Stevenage, where there was an option to extend his contract by another year.
It is claimed the Saddlers are leading the race involving a string of fellow League Two clubs in the hunt for Pressley's services, which Walsall will pay a fee for.
Walsall's off-season transfer business has so far seen wing-back Courtney Clarke check in from National League South outfit Eastbourne Borough.
Head coach Mat Sadler has now turned his attention to adding more options to his frontline, with Pressley on the radar.
The centre-forward, a former Scotland youth international, spent the second half of last season at Walsall's League Two rivals Barrow having fallen out of favour with parent club Stevenage of the division above.
Pressley notched four goals in 21 appearances - 15 of them starts - for Barrow including an eye-catching double in victory at MK Dons in April.
Edinburgh-born Pressley swapped Hearts for the West Midlands while still in his formative years having moved to Villa's academy just prior to entering his teen years. He was on Villa's youth books between 2013 and 2020 before a switch to Brentford, then of the Championship.
He was prolific for Brentford B but made just three senior appearances for the Bees before moving to Stevenage in 2023, following a couple of loan spells in League One with AFC Wimbledon and Accrington Stanley.
Walsall are preparing for another season in the fourth tier after their season ended in Wembley heartache and a play-off final defeat to AFC Wimbledon.
A significant amount of Sadler's squad from last season were out of contract. In the forward areas Danny Johnson has already bid his farewell to supporters. Jamille Matt and Albert Adomah are among those who are officially free agents from the end of June, when deals expire.
