Bears announce star spinner to leave club
Warwickshire have confirmed spinner Danny Briggs will leave the club at the end of the season.
The 34-year-old is re-signing for Sussex, five years after leaving the south coast county for Edgbaston.
Warwickshire had been keen to keep Briggs, the leading wicket taker in the history of the T20 Blast, after opening discussions over a contract extension.
But he has opted to head back to the south coast, signing a deal which will see him play white ball cricket and join Sussex’s coaching team.
Bears new sporting director, James Thomas, explained: “Danny has been outstanding over the last five seasons, and while we hoped to re-sign him and had opened discussions, it was clear he was considering his future—both in terms of his red ball career and where he wanted his family to be.
“Although we’re disappointed to see him move on, we respect and support his decision to continue playing white ball cricket while making the transition into coaching.
“Danny will always be part of the Warwickshire family, and he’ll be welcomed back to Edgbaston with open arms.”
Briggs played a key part in the Warwickshire team which won the County Championship in his first season at the club in 2021.
Despite featuring rarely in red ball cricket over the past 12 months, he has remained a major player in T20, finishing leading wicket taker in last season’s Blast tournament.
Briggs said: “I’m really looking forward to coming back to Sussex, it’s a really talented and exciting squad playing some great cricket.
"Hopefully I can help contribute to plenty of wins and trophies along the way. Hove is a special ground and I can’t wait to return.”
