But just four matches into Thomas Tuchel’s reign, it is fair to be mildly concerned.

Drawing too much from the displays in either match might be dangerous, considering they came at the end of what for many members of the Three Lions squad had been a marathon season. 

These June internationals, in a summer without a major tournament, can often feel a nuisance and surprise results are not uncommon. Who can forget Gareth Southgate being booed off at Molineux after England were thrashed 4-0 by Hungary four years ago?

On the other hand, keeping the players engaged and enthused at a time when they would ideally rather be on the beach is one of the challenges of international management. The body language of England’s troops suggests Tuchel and his staff may have struggled on that score.
