Walsall supporters play their part in piece of EFL play-off final weekend history
Walsall's afternoon at Wembley was not one to remember and one they will want to forget quickly.
A single goal in the first half was enough to give AFC Wimbledon the victory and send them to League One at the expense of Mat Sadler's men.
However, despite the heartbreak the Saddlers were involved in a piece of EFL and play-off final history and played their part with their Wembley appearance.
As is the case for with the play-off finals, they are played across three days over a weekend.
The days have been made up on different days in the past, with this year seeing the Saddlers and the Dons go head to head in the final clash of the weekend.
And in the process they were involved in a bit of EFL history, as this season's play-off finals broke the record for the highest ever aggregate attendance across the weekend.
A total of 211,858 fans turned out at Wembley across the bank holiday weekend to watch the Sky Bet Championship, League One and League Two promotion matches.
The total smashes the previous record of 197,550 set in 2008.
Saturday’s Championship Final between Sheffield United and Sunderland was attended by 82,718, while League One’s Charlton Athletic and Leyton Orient match was watched by 76,193 on Sunday and 50,947 were on hand to see Monday’s League Two showdown between AFC Wimbledon and Walsall.
