Walsall star makes 'back to our best' statement for play-off showpiece

Midfielder Ryan Stirk reckons Walsall are 'back to themselves' and their top form ahead of Monday's play-off final.

The combative midfielder, 24, is gearing up for the second League Two Wembley showdown of his career having fallen short with former loan side Mansfield three years ago.

Stirk is a settled and key figure at Bescot as one of boss Mat Sadler's first names on the teamsheet and the former Blues youngster insisted the confidence in Walsall's dressing room never wavered - even during the disastrous run of form in the second half of the campaign.

Walsall won just twice between January 25 and the final game of the regular season. Head coach Sadler said stats, specifically expected goals against figures, had shown goals had been going in against his side well above average for the standard of chances created, suggesting a level of misfortune.

Tamworth-born Stirk said, when asked about how the side rallied from disappointment to see off Chesterfield in the play-off semi-final: "It did (show a lot of character) and I don't think anybody in this building actually doubted us.
