Why Walsall's Gillingham decision could prove a blessing in disguise

Questions will inevitably be asked of Walsall if they lose at Gillingham on the weekend but I feel the international absentees could prove to be a blessing in disguise.

Mat Sadler rung the changes in the draw at Bromley with no fewer than five new faces from the team which began their 3-1 home defeat against Grimsby Town a few days earlier.

That provided Ryan Stirk and Charlie Lakin with a vital rest, with the former starting every league game prior for Walsall this term.

In terms of those called up, Tommy Simkin, David Okagbue and Liam Gordon have been ever-presents and the decision not to request a postponement has raised eyebrows among the Saddlers fan base.

But some of Walsall's best periods under Sadler have come when the fringe players have dislodged the so-called regulars and this weekend will provide them with an opportunity to do the same again.

Connor Barrett will start his two-match suspension at Gillingham on Saturday.
