Golf is back and the fairways are full

Penn Golf Club secretary Mick Woodhouse is delighted to have some normality back after they were given the green light to reopen.

New lockdown rules allowed golf and tennis clubs to get back going yesterday, with two people from different households allowed to play together as long as they keep two metres apart. And Woodhouse insists hundreds have already called up to book tee-off times. On whether it is nice to be back, he said: “Absolutely. Definitely.

“We’ve got 230 tee times for members already booked in – and the phone is still going. Everybody is keen to get back.”

Ahead of the planned reopening yesterday, guidance from governing bodies originally stated that people must play alone or with people in their household.

Following the confusion surrounding the rules, on Monday the guidelines were updated, meaning two people from different households could play together if they adhered to social distancing.

The change in the rules was welcomed by clubs in the region, as the businesses aim to get up and running again after a fight to survive during the coronavirus lockdown.

Woodhouse added: “We must also thank our members as they’ve been very loyal and supported us during the lockdown, so we could get the course in good order. We must thank them for that.”
