Aston Villa blog: Steve Bruce must understand magnitude of job

If Steve Bruce didn't know the size of the job he had before the Wolves game, then he does now...writes Villa blogger Justin Hawthorne

We robbed a point off them on Saturday, we were very, very lucky to get away with the 1-1 scoreline.

We started OK and managed to put together a decent move down the left with Grealish and McCormack linking well to create the move that led to the opening goal from the penalty spot, which Kodjia slotted away nicely, but once again we failed to take control of the game and consolidate our lead.

Kodjia had a good volley saved and should have been less selfish when shooting at goal with McCormack in acres of space begging for a five-yard pass when unmarked.

From that point onwards we were second-best and Wolves drew level with a penalty of their own after a handball from Cissokho.

When half-time came I genuinely thought if we could regroup and come out firing we could go on and win the game.

Unfortunately that couldn't have been more wrong, as the second half went on we got more tired and panicky and it was only a combination of poor finishing and last-ditch blocks that saved us from a comfortable defeat.

McCormack, Elphick and Jedinak looked well off the pace in the second half with the latter soon making way for Westwood. We did have forward options on the bench and we were desperate to change it but, due to injuries to Richards and Elphick, we couldn't make the changes I'm sure Bruce would have wanted to.

In the end we were more than happy to finish with a point and with a trip to Reading tomorrow night to come there isn't much time to address the problems we saw.

But I'm sure the manager is experienced enough to know what he wants to do, I just hope he gets the reaction he needs.
