Rangers see their title party delayed

Stafford Rangers were unable to seal the league title in front of a packed Marston Road after being held to a goalless draw against Basford United.

A gate of 1,250 watched the home side go within inches of sealing the Evo-Stik First Division South crown while Rangers keeper Adam Whitehouse also saved two penalties.

"I had a rollercoaster of emotions, more so because people behind you are telling you what is happening elsewhere," said Rangers manager Neil Kitching.

"I'm really pleased with the desire and attitude and we threw the kitchen sink at trying to get that goal.

"Second half we looked nervous, edgy and really tired but there has been no end of opportunities to win the football match."

Saul Deeney, remembered more for Burton Albion's FA Cup draw against Manchester United, kept the Boro at bay with a string of saves.

However, Basford, who will be in the play-offs in two weeks time, could have picked up maximum points themselves.

After 24 minutes Leon Miles swiped at Jermain Hollis but Stuart Henrie's penalty was easily saved by Whitehouse.

Rangers were on top for most of the game and went within inches of sealing the win when Ben Haseley's shot from distance looped on to the bar before Ahmed Obeng's close-range shot was blocked by Deeney in the dying moments.

Deep into injury time Basford were awarded their second penalty when Alex Melbourne brought down Antony Junior but Whitehouse was again equal to the penalty and jumped on the rebound.

Rangers may have to draw at Coalville Town next week to seal the title if Shaw Lane win their final two games.
