Monday match a bridge too far for Harriers

Kidderminster Harriers' slim hopes of avoiding relegation suffered another crippling blow with a 2-0 defeat against play-off hopefuls Tranmere Rovers at Aggborough.

James Norwood notched both Rovers goals to leave Harriers 12 points adrift of safety with just six National League matches left.

Disappointed Aggborough chief Colin Gordon admitted the match was 'a bridge too far' for his bottom-of-the-table strugglers.

He said: "Tranmere have got a budget that is probably six or seven times ours, maybe more. You can see that.

"They have great game intelligence, great experience and were always a threat. They have got a way of playing that works.

"We lacked endeavour today. The boys put everything in, but it was a bridge too far really."

Harriers, without influential forward Ben Whitfield who was suffering from a stomach bug, worried the visitors in the 10th minute when a free-kick by Lewis Kinsella found Kevin Langmead, whose close-range header forced a fine save from goalkeeper Scott Davies.

Rovers, however, quickly overcame the scare and forged ahead when slack marking allowed Norwood to expertly bring the ball under control before netting from six yards.

Harriers huffed and puffed after the break but were unable to create any clear-cut opportunities.

Gary Brabin's promotion chasers were denied the chance of doubling their lead in the 82nd minute when Max O'Leary pulled off a splendid save to deny substitute Scott Fenwick.

O'Leary excelled again to keep out a close-range shot from Norwood, who sealed his side's points in stoppage time.
