Glassboys must go the distance for Cup progress

Stourbridge boss Gary Hackett admitted a sense of disappointment after his side were handed a long away trip to Dover Athletic in the FA Cup first round.

The Glassboys face a journey of more than 200 miles to the Crabble Athletic Ground where they will face a Dover side currently third in the Vanarama National League.

Hackett's men could have potentially faced a glamour tie against the likes of Sheffield United, Wigan or neighbours Walsall.

And he joked the trip to Dover is so far, it feels like a European tie.

"It's so close to France I feel like we have qualified for Europe," the former Albion star said. "When you look at it at first glance it is a little bit of a dampener. But when you put it into perspective you realise we are in the first round of the FA Cup and we have a game that we can win.

"That's the magic of the FA Cup – there is good draws and bad draws.

"Now we need to go and win so we can get one of the bigger clubs in the second round."

The Glassboys beat rivals Kidderminster 3-0 on Saturday to make it through to the first round proper.

Stourbridge previously reached the FA Cup first round in 2009, 2011 and 2013 and earned a place in the second round on the latter two occasions.

"Dover are going well in their league but we have players who can step up to the plate," Hackett added.

"We will go down their positively.

"I feel sorry for the fans because it's a long way.

"But I can promise them the team will do it's absolute best."

The FA Cup draw was more kind to Walsall who will begin the competition at home to League One rivals Fleetwood Town.

National League North outfit Worcester City, who share Kidderminster's Aggborough ground, were handed a plum tie against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.

All first round ties will be played between November 6 and 9.
