Derbyshire, who swims for Stafford Apex, won the men's 1500m freestyle event in a scorching time of 15.31.18.

And he has added to his medal haul at the competition by then helping the men's 4 x 200 team to silver.

The 17-year-old, who also represents The Royal School Wolverhampton Swimming Club, thrived under the pressure of being the fastest entry at the 1500m.

And he felt he could have gone even faster under different circumstances, saying: "hat was a good time and I am really pleased to have won gold.

"It's difficult to race up front on your own for so long. I think I could have gone quicker if there had been more competition to spur me on."

Derbyshire and team-mates Kyle Chisholm, Joe Litchfield and Lewis Clough completed the course in 7:30.13.

They finished less than a second behind winners Australia who crossed the line in 7:29.27. South Africa came third in 8:02.84.

He could make it three medals for the games when he competes in the 400m men's freestyle today.

Derbyshire is not the only local star in action in Samoa as Brittany Horton, from Brierley Hill, came within inches of a medal in the 100m girls back stroke final.

The City of Birmingham Club swimmer crossed the line in 1:03.18, just marginally after South Africa's Nathania Van Niekerk had touched in 1.03 dead, to claim the bronze medal.

And Stafford Grammar School pupil Emma Hamplett won England's first medal of the competition by triumphing in the girls javelin event. The Commonwealth Youth Games run until Friday.
