Close to 500 spectators were in attendance to see the country's best young riders battle it out over five events.

The start sheet numbered more than 160 competitors from all four corners of the UK, who earned their places by competing in the various regional omniums.

A host of cycling clubs were represented, from Scottish clubs including the Glasgow Riderz and the East Kilbride Road Club, Wales the Maindy Flyers and Cardiff JIF and London clubs the Hillingdon Slipstreamers, Welwyn Wheelers CC and VC Londres.

Hilleard was the pick of home riders, beginning her day by finishing fourth in the elimination race and continuing her form throughout. Only Jessica Roberts, of RST Racing, proved stronger to pip her to the title.

The under-16s boys event provided some of the most exciting racing of the day, particularly in the scratch race when VC Londres' Jacob Vaughan edged out Theo Hartley of the Speedflex team.

Another VC rider, Fred Wright, would go on to claim overall victory on the day with Wolverhampton's Ben Hardwick back in fourth.

Lichfield's Lewis Askey led from the front in the under-14 boys event, setting the fastest time in the opening time trial and not relinquishing the lead all day. He was, however, beaten in the points race by team-mate Daniel Cooper after a thrilling last-lap battle.

Wolverhampton's Sophie White had some promising moments in the under-14 girls, not least when she led the scratch race as it entered the final lap. Cranc Cyclesport's Ella Barnwell took the overall honours, ahead of VC's Becky Surridge.

In the under-12 girls, Wolverhampton's Grace Lister finished 12th overall with Natalie Bloomer securing more glory for VC.

The London club also took the honours in the under-12 boys courtesy of Billy Gilbey, who was able to fend off the challenge of Leicestershire's Kieran Riley.
