Smith urges Saddlers to be TV stars again in Sheffield showdown

Dean Smith will challenge Walsall to again be TV stars in Wednesday's Johnstone's Paint Trophy showdown with Sheffield United.

The Saddlers host the Blades for an Area quarter-final, which will be screened live on Sky Sports.

Smith's men have won their last two televised games, against Portsmouth and Peterborough, in impressive fashion and the manager is keen to keep that run going.

He claims momentum remains with his side following Saturday's 2-2 FA Cup first round draw with Shrewsbury, in which Tom Bradshaw netted a 90th minute equaliser.

"It would have been a very flat dressing room if we had been beaten," said Smith. "We are looking forward to Wednesday, in the same way we were looking forward to Saturday.

"Sheffield United will be a different proposition in front of the TV cameras. Our recent record has been good. We want to maintain that."

Smith felt his side were fully deserving of at least a draw against the Shrews, claiming it would have been a "travesty" had they not been in the hat for tonight's second round draw. The Saddlers will now travel to Greenhous Meadow for the replay a week tomorrow.

And Smith hailed the performance of top scorer Bradshaw, who netted twice against his former club.

"His development is getting better and better. He has nine goals for the season which is really good and we were really pleased with him.

"For him to score against the team he has come from was really pleasing for him. They shackled him really well in the first half and he only got the one chance but he perseveres and keeps going."
