Smith hails Saddlers' new boy Grimes' firepower
New Walsall signing Ashley Grimes was today dubbed one of the best finishers manager Dean Smith has seen.
The 27-year-old, who has signed for the Saddlers on a one-year deal after leaving League Two Bury, arrives at the Banks's Stadium to boost Smith's firepower.
And the Saddlers boss believes the former Manchester City youth-teamer, who had a year on his contract at Gigg Lane, is capable of scoring goals.
"He's a lad I tried to sign a couple of years ago," said manager Dean Smith.
"He has fantastic technical ability and is one of the best finishers I've seen. We've done our homework on him and I've received some glowing reports.
"He'll complement the way we play and hopefully this move will reignite him so he can reach the levels he's capable of.
"He's had a good grounding and I'm delighted to bring him here."
Swinton-born Grimes is confident he can succeed in League One.
He said: "I've played at this level before and enjoyed it, so hopefully I can give a good account of myself.
"I can't wait to get started. This is a great move for me."
Grimes, who spent two years in Manchester United's academy before moving to Bolton then City, has scored 35 goals in 90 career League starts, plus a further 51 appearances from the bench.
His first-team breakthrough came on loan at Swindon, before current Wolves boss Kenny Jackett, who knew him from City, signed him for Millwall in 2008.
But he enjoyed his most prolific spell on loan away from The New Den at Lincoln, netting 15 goals in 27 games in 2010-11 to earn the player of the year award.
The biggest chunk of games came in his next move, to Rochdale in June 2011 with 18 goals in 54 starts before joining Bury last summer.
Meanwhile young keeper Liam Roberts, 19, has joined Richard Sneekes' non-League Rushall Olympic on loan until January.
