Steve Clarke: West Brom need to improve or I'll be under pressure

Steve Clarke admits he could be the next Premier League manager under pressure if Albion fail to make the most of their crucial pre-Christmas matches.

The Baggies face Norwich, Cardiff and Hull in their next three games as they look to improve on a run of just one win from their last eight.

And Clarke, whose Hawthorns contract ends next summer, admits a poor fortnight could leave him facing scrutiny like Chris Hughton, who arrives at The Hawthorns with Norwich tomorrow with his Carrow Road future in doubt.

"I think you expect scrutiny now, to be honest," admitted Clarke.

"It's just the way the game is – the short-termism of it.

"It's a fact that if you lose a couple of games people start to look at you and think 'he could be the next one under pressure.'

"That's just the way it is. I think we all accept that."

But Clarke believes the Baggies' vital triple-header is about the team and not his position – and he insisted he will not lose sleep about his job as he prepares for talks in the new year over a new deal.

"The only time I struggle to sleep is after a game because you still have the emotions and adrenaline," he said.

"But after that, I'm still sleeping.

"Some wins would certainly strengthen my position.

"But I honestly don't give too much thought to my own situation. It is not about me, it's about West Bromwich Albion, the team and the supporters.

"I try to do my best for them.

"I want them to finish as high up the table as they can and I want the supporters to come to the home games and be entertained and go home with a smile on their face.

"The contract situation takes care of itself."
