Birmingham are only two points ahead of the bottom two after they were resoundingly thrashed by Premier League leaders Manchester United this afternoon, going down to a 5-0 defeat at Old Trafford.

Walsall are now five points from safety in League One as caretaker Dean Smith's appointment as manager until the end of the season preceded another defeat, 2-1 at Exeter.

The focus now turns to Villa and Darren Bent, as the £24million new signing makes his debut at 5:30pm in the Premier League home game against Manchester City.

Albion travel to Blackburn for the Sunday 4pm Premier League kick off at Ewood Park tomorrow.

14:45: The early Championship game sees 10-man Derby lose to Nottingham Forest in a one-goal East Midlands derby at Pride Park, while Hearts beat Glasgow Rangers in the battle of the teams second and third in the Scottish Premier League at Tynecastle.

Derby were beaten by a strike from a former Ram late on, striker Robert Earnshaw, and also lost Dean Moxey to a second bookable offence in stoppage time.

Hearts pulled to within two places of Rangers in second place after a 1-0 home win, Ryan Stevenson netting the winner in the second-half.
