Albion striker Marcus Haber has returned to the Hawthorns after his loan spell at St Johnstone was ended by a snapped cruciate ligament.

The Canada international has been ruled out for the rest of the season after snapping his anterior cruciate ligament in Saturday's 3-0 Scottish Premier League defeat to Kilmarnock.

Haber had made 14 appearances, including five starts, and scored two goals for Saints after joining on a season-long loan.

The 21-year-old was injured on Saturday during a late substitute's appearance for the Perth side, managed by former Baggies midfielder Derek McInnes.

McInnes said: "First and foremost we are hugely disappointed for Marcus.

"He will not play again this season and in all likelihood he will return to West Bromwich Albion to carry out his rehabilitation.

"Understandably, he is devastated by the news and our thoughts are with him.

"But he's a young boy and at an early enough stage of his career where he can recover fully from this setback.

"From a St Johnstone point of view it is obviously a huge blow to our options, particularly as Marcus was invariably one of the three under-21 players we are required to have.

"Following on from Kevin Moon and Martin Hardie, that is now three players who have suffered this injury."

Albion signed Haber in January from Vancouver Whitecaps after impressing in a Hawthorns trial and he ended last season on loan with Exeter, before spending the summer back in Canada in a loan stint with his former club.

The Baggies were keen for the powerful forward, who played for them during pre-season, to spend a season in the Scottish Premier League to taste regular action in British football. But those hopes have now been dashed.

Head coach Roberto Di Matteo was also assessing his own walking wounded today, before the team set off for London ahead of tomorrow's Premier League fixture at West Ham.

They hope James Morrison will overcome his knee problem in time to return while Steven Reid could start after an Achilles problem kept him on the substitutes' bench for Sunday's 2-0 home defeat to Manchester City.
