16:55: A pleasing day for our teams in the region, as our Premier League clubs already in action all avoid defeat on the opening day.

Wolves won the opening day for the first time in the Premier League in relatively comfortable fashion after being two goals up at half-time, although a goal for Stoke after the break ensured some tense moments.

After one of the most difficult weeks in history for Villa they simply swept aside West Ham, winning 3-0 in their first game without boss Martin O'Neill with a third goal from? James Milner. Could it be his last action for the club?

Birmingham looked dead and buried at Sunderland after going two goals down but a second-half salvo stunned home boss and former Blues manager Steve Bruce, defenders Scott Dann and Liam Ridgewell up from the back to score.

Walsall also won for the first time this season at the third attempt against Brentford in League One, goals from Alex Nicholls and Julian Gray cancelling out Gary Alexander's equaliser at Griffin Park.

All that is left now is Albion to play Chelsea in their return to the Premier League kicking off at 5:30pm - if the Baggies can take anything from Stamford Bridge, it really has been a day to remember.

15:14: So much for Wolves having to contain the threat of Stoke's £8million signing Kenwyne Jones at Molineux - the striker has had to replaced by Mamady Sidibe through injury.

14:45: The wait for the first Premier League goal of the season goes on largely thanks to a Man of the Match display from former Birmingham loan star Joe Hart, for Manchester City at Tottenham.

The goalkeeper was flying as he saved acrobatically from Jermain Defoe, Tom Huddlestone and Benoit Assou-Ekotto, while Gareth Bale also hit the post, as City escaped from White Hart Lane with a point.

14:30: And we are off! The Premier League season finally begins after the kick-off of the Football League last week and two of our teams are at home this afternoon, with Wolves taking on a Midlands derby first up with the visit of Stoke.

Mick McCarthy's men played out a dour goalless draw with the Potters in the corresponding game last season and for Wolves to go one better today would particularly please their fans, who have never seen their team win on the opening day in the Premier League.

A turbulent week, to put it mildly, for Villa sees them host West Ham in their first game without manager Martin O'Neill, who resigned on Monday, but Manchester City target James Milner is in caretaker boss Kevin MacDonald's team today.

Birmingham have a long away-day to face their former boss Steve Bruce at Sunderland, with Blues and manager Alex McLeish looking to be quick out of the blocks and build on their ninth place finish last season.

Walsall are still looking to get off the mark as they play Brentford at Griffin Park today, after losing to Milton Keynes Dons on the opening day and being dumped out of the Carling Cup to Tranmere.

Albion have the Mount Everest of opening-day tasks coming up in their Premier League return kicking off at 5:30pm - against champions and double winners Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
