Albion are set to make a move for Nigeria World Cup striker Peter Odemwingie.
The Lokomotiv Moscow forward is one of the Baggies' top transfer targets as they hunt extra firepower for their Premier League campaign.
And Albion officials look set to firm up their interest in the few days with the 29-year-old desperate to quit Russia and test himself in England.
The former Lille hitman was a target for Birmingham earlier this summer with Lokomotiv claiming their turned down a bid of £1.6m from Blues boss Alex McLeish.
Odemwingie, who can play as a central striker or a winger, was reportedly valued by Lokomotiv earlier this summer at more than £8m.
But, with the player entering the final year of his contract in Moscow and anxious to move, it is likely he will leave before the end of the transfer window for a much lower figure.
Odemwingie was born in Uzbekistan to a Russian mother and Nigerian father but made his name with Belgian club La Louviere before joining Lille, for whom he scored 23 goals in 75 games between 2002 and 2005.
The 5ft 11in forward then moved to Lokomotiv, for whom he has struck 21 goals in 75 appearances.
Albion boss Roberto Di Matteo still wants at least one striker added to his squad before the transfer window closes on August 31 and the club have still not ruled out signing two forwards.
