Van Damme yes but Fletcher no
Wolves are drawing closer to the signing of £2.5million Anderlecht utility man Jelle van Damme – but have denied any interest in £7million-rated Steven Fletcher.
Wolves are drawing closer to the signing of £2.5million Anderlecht utility man Jelle van Damme – but have denied any interest in £7million-rated Steven Fletcher.
No fee has yet been agreed for Van Damme, but the 26-year-old claims a deal is close after saying: "I have been in contact with them for a long time and Mick McCarthy was very insistent."
Chief executive Jez Moxey is hopeful a deal can be struck but admits the clubs have not reached agreement on a fee.
He added: "We haven't agreed anything with anyone yet."
Six foot four Van Damme, who has been extensively scouted by Albion and Fulham, would help Wolves in different positions with the ability to play left-back, left midfield and centre-back.
Signing a striker is McCarthy's top priority however and a report on Saturday claimed Wolves were hoping to sign Burnley's 12-goal top scorer Fletcher for £6million.
Bolton and Birmingham are thought to be on the trail of the Scotland international, but there appears to be no interest from Molineux however.
Moxey said: "I know what I'm dealing with and he's not one of them."
McCarthy has gone on record to reveal the club will target the three relegated clubs for their summer shopping.
Wolves have declared an interest in Lens striker Aruna Dindane, who spent the season on loan at beaten FA Cup finalists Portsmouth, where McCarthy is a firm admirer of Jamie O'Hara – on loan from Tottenham – Frederic Piquonne and Aaron Mokoena.
The manager is also hoping to sign Hull winger Stephen Hunt, who is hoping to be fit for the start of the season after breaking his foot.
The club have already signed £2million Adlene Guedioura on a three-year deal from Charleroi, after an impressive loan spell and extended Geoffrey Mujangi Bia's loan for a further 12 months.
But McCarthy wants to strengthen left-back area, central defence and midfield as well as up front.
Dindane, Piquonne, Kris Boyd, Fletcher and Stoke striker Dave Kitson, who has fallen out with boss Tony Pulis, have all been linked with moves to Molineux since the season ended.
But the only confirmed targets so far are Dindane, Hunt and van Damme, while the club have denied any interest in Boyd and Fletcher.
