Birmingham City boss Alex McLeish today challenged his younger strikers to match the levels of the veteran he has rewarded with a a new deal.
Former Albion favourite Kevin Phillips' top-flight career will go on for at least one more year after McLeish decided "Super Kev" could still do a job for him at the age of 36.
McLeish decided not to take up the option to buy on-loan Christian Benitez because the £7m wanted by his parent club Santos Laguna was too high.
McLeish concluded: "Kevin has been excellent for us and Cameron Jerome and 'Chucho' (Benitez) are still not as good finishers as him."
Phillips opted to leave Albion and move to St Andrew's in the summer of 2008 and played a major role in Blues' promotion.
Then he settled into the role of "impact substitute" back in the Premier League last season during which he struck his 250th caree goal.
"Kevin has been phenomenal as an impact player for us this season," said McLeish.
"His performances have been stating the case to be given a new contract and we will be looking to offer him one. I signed him for two years when I think West Brom were hedging their bets on a two-year deal and his contribution during these two seasons has been priceless.
"I knew Phillips had the fitness, despite his years - what I would expect of a top professional who would still be able to handle the Premier League.
"I knew he wouldn't be able to play every game but he has been excellent for us ."
Phillips' biggest impact came with his two goals to beat old rivals Wolves in February.
