No major overhaul needed for Nicholls
Walsall striker Alex Nicholls has insisted the squad doesn't need a major overhaul as the Saddlers prepare to streamline their squad.
Walsall striker Alex Nicholls has insisted the squad doesn't need a major overhaul as the Saddlers prepare to streamline their squad.
The clear out has already begun with the departures of Rhys Weston and Sam Parkin this week while the rest of the out-of-contract players, Nicholls included, discover their fates on Monday.
But, with Saturday's season finale with Milton Keynes Dons to play first, Nicholls believes only a few minor changes would see the team shine next year.
He said: "I'm not the manager and I'm not going to tell him what he should do, but if we add bits of quality to every part of the pitch and maybe tweak a few things in training, I can't see why we can't go through a season like how we've finished this one.
"Personally, with the players we have here and the way we can play I don't see why we can't challenge. We're capable of playing the way we have for the last few games all season.
"It's something the gaffer and Martin O'Connor will look at over the summer but I don't see why, if we're more consistent, we can't be higher up the table.
"At Swindon look at them a couple of seasons ago they were really struggling. I remember going there beating them 3-0 a few years ago. Now look at them, they are challenging for an automatic promotion spot.
"There's no reason why we can't follow them."
