Birmingham defender Liam Ridgewell wants to remain with the club and sign a new contract at St Andrew's.

The former Villa player, whose deal is up at the end of this season but with the club holding a two-year option, was reported to have put in a transfer request.

But Blues boss Alex McLeish rubbished this claim and Ridgewell wants to stay at St Andrew's with talks having already opened regarding a new deal.

He said: "I don't want to leave Birmingham. We've had a good season, we're doing well - and I'm enjoying it here.

"I've left the new contract down to my agent. It's easier for me to concentrate on my game and let the contract take care of itself.

"Hopefully we can come to some sort of agreement, then get it signed as quickly and as easily as possible."
