Mattis ready to return for Walsall
Walsall midfielder Dwayne Mattis has declared himself ready to return to the team after fearing he had suffered another broken leg.
Walsall midfielder Dwayne Mattis has declared himself ready to return to the team after fearing he had suffered another broken leg.
The 28-year-old is available for the home clash with Colchester tomorrow after being out for four weeks, following a clash with Brentford's Kevin O'Connor in the Saddlers' 2-1 win last month.
Mattis, who broke his leg while on loan with the Saddlers in 2007, was stretchered off and had nine stitches in a calf wound but feared the worst and thought his season was over.
He said: "I was worried because there was a big gash and then it went numb, which was like when I broke my leg. When our physio Jon Whitney called for the stretcher I was very worried, but luckily the X-rays came back clear.
"What worried me was it went numb straight away, things go through your mind when you get stretchered off and you fear the worst. I went to hospital straight away and they were really good so I have my mind back on the rest of the season."
Mattis has targeted a win against promotion chasing Colchester, as the Saddlers look to arrest their home slump.
They have won just once in nine games at the Banks's Stadium and the player called on the fans get behind the team, despite their frustrations.
He said: "At home we have started poorly and it does take a lot to get out of it. For us to do well we have to start really well and then we build our confidence, especially at home. We haven't played well at home, we've played our best football away.
"If we start well and all the fans are behind us then we'll be on the top of our game. It's when we start badly and the fans start moaning some of the lads go into their shell and that's when we have a dodgy performance."
