Walsall midfielder Dwayne Mattis has given himself a 50/50 chance of being able to return to Banks's Stadium battle against Millwall.

Mattis was carried off during the 2-1 victory over Brentford just under a fortnight ago with a deep gash to his calf.

It was initially feared the 28-year-old could face a lengthy spell on the sidelines but, after responding well to treatment, is due to have his stitches removed today following his return to training.

Now the player remains hopeful of making a surprise early return to action for the League One clash against the Lions.

He said: "I'm feeling a lot better. I had eight stitches in a wound that was quite deep. I think the stitches are coming out today and it has settled down a lot to be fair.

"No one likes to be injured. You want to be playing games and I'm just glad that I haven't been out for too long. It's only been a week or so that I've had to sit out, so I'm thankful for that.

"It was a deep cut but it's recovered pretty quick, which we've all been pleased with. I think it's 50/50 in terms of Saturday. I've joined in with the lads and felt okay but it is a little sore still. I want to be involved because it's a big match."

Millwall currently sit one place off the play-off positions by virtue of goal difference alone.

They are just four places above the Saddlers but hold a 15-point advantage over Chris Hutchings' men – but, despite the gap, Mattis insists Walsall haven't given up hope of catching them.

He said: "Millwall are chasing a play-off place and whilst it's still mathematically possible, that's our aim too.

"We go into every game looking for the three points and Saturday will be no different."
