Former Albion promotion hero Kevin Phillips has backed the Baggies' current strikeforce to fire the club back to the Premier League.

The Birmingham striker, who top-scored as Tony Mowbray's side won the Championship two years ago, has given his seal of approval to former Hawthorns team-mate Roman Bednar and Albion summer signing Simon Cox.

Phillips understands the comparisons between himself and Cox, who has scored eight times in 17 Baggies starts.

He said: "I certainly see the similarity. I have watched him a couple of times and commentated on him a couple of times on Sky, he is a similar build to me and is an 18-yard box and six-yard box player.

"He is a natural finisher. He is in a team that creates chances, as it was when I was there, and if you're a natural goalscorer in that team you will get goals. I'm sure there is more to come from him but he looks an outstanding player.

"Roman had a fantastic spell when I was there and all credit to the lad after the problems he had with his off-field, personal life.

"To come back the way he has, scoring goals, shows he is a confident lad. Roman lives off confidence as most centre forwards do and if you're putting your arm around him and saying 'well done' you will get the best out of him.

"His form doesn't surprise me one little bit."

Phillips reaffirmed his reputation with Baggies fans by scoring both goals in Birmingham's recent 2-1 win over Wolves.

The veteran goalscorer is now eyeing a double celebration in the summer.

He said: "Come the end of the season I hope I'm celebrating us staying in the Premier League and Albion getting promoted. I've watched them a few times this year and there's not a major difference.

"They still play some good football, Roberto Di Matteo has brought in some good signings and they have all gelled. They probably concede too many at times and that was the case when I was there as well, but they are the ups and downs of Baggies teams."
