Hutchings wants more of the same
Chris Hutchings admits he is unsure if Walsall's winning goal at Leeds last night should have stood but has urged his team to build on their shock victory.
Chris Hutchings admits he is unsure if Walsall's winning goal at Leeds last night should have stood but has urged his team to build on their shock victory.
The Saddlers claimed their first ever win at Elland Road after Clayton McDonald's late header was adjudged to have crossed the line despite protestations from the home side.
It capped a fantastic display which saw Dwayne Mattis fire them into a second half lead before Gary McSheffrey's freak goal levelled.
McDonald's 80th minute header won it after Leeds goalkeeper Casper Ankergren fumbled the ball and Hutchings is unsure if it went in.
"I don't know whether it was over the line, it was very difficult to see from where we were but we're delighted the official flagged," he said.
"Everyone had to put in a real shift and we got our just rewards. It was an excellent win and we can move on. They showed great character, an excellent work ethic and we had some luck.
"It's nice to come to a place like Elland Road and take three points. We had to defend really well and put our bodies on the line. I expect them to go and get automatic promotion, they are a good side."
The Saddlers were under pressure for much of the game but refused to buckle and Hutchings has now called on them not to get carried away.
He said: "We enjoyed the night and it's their first home defeat in the league this season so it's nice to take that scalp but it's only three points.
"It's nice because it's a big club and they are doing well. They've had great cup success and I can't speak highly enough of Simon Grayson and I fully expect them to go up.
"But we have to find our consistency. Last week at Bristol Rovers we did something similar and got a great result and then at Oldham on Saturday we were poor. It is 10 wins, 10 draws and 10 defeats and that says a lot about where we are.
"We've always said getting back-to-back wins is key and there was a gap between ourselves and one or two teams above us, a win closes it up. We've got a couple of home games now and we must build on it and see where they take us.
"It was a battling performance, we knew we had to ride our luck and the chances would come."
And the Saddlers' opening goal impressed Hutchings. Mark Bradley, Darryl Westlake and Julian Gray were all involved before Mattis drilled in from the edge of the area 60 seconds into the second half.
"Dwayne's goal was excellent, it was a great set up by Julian and he hit it sweetly," he said.
"In the first half Julian had one or two opportunities to do the same but he's got that experience and knowhow of when to do it and when not to do it."
Meanwhile Leeds boss Grayson was left frustrated after his men lost at home in the league for the first time in 26 matches.
He said: "We did everything we could and we certainly deserved something out of the game. We're disappointed because we're not sure if the ball crossed the line but we have to get on with it."
