The defender saw goalkeeper Casper Ankergren fumble his header over the line 10 minutes from time to cap an outstanding performance.
Dwayne Mattis gave the visitors the lead a minute into the second-half,before goalkeeper Clayton Ince's mistake allowed Gary McSheffrey to equalise.
Darren Byfield was ruled out with illness for Walsall, while Julian Gray made his full debut.
The Saddlers frustrated their hosts in a gritty first half as Ince saved well from Bradley Johnson and built on their impressive display 60 seconds after the break.
Darryl Westlake tossed in a cross for Gray, who picked out Mattis to find the corner from 16 yards.
But the lead was short lived when Ince misjudged McSheffrey's cross and it sailed into the net after 53 minutes.
The Saddlers had to withstand some heavy pressure but stunned the home side with the winner 10 minutes from time.
Against the run of play they won a corner and when McDonald rose highest Ankergren could only carry it over the line.
