Defender Manny Smith has insisted Walsall are too good to be involved in a relegation scrap as they aim to put their poor form behind them.

The Saddlers' seven game winless streak has seen them lose touch with the League One play-off spots and had sceptics casting a glance at the drop zone.

But they are six points clear of danger and Smith says they don't fear the drop and their confidence hasn't been hit.

He said: "We are too good, when everyone is on our game we can give anyone in the league a game. Sometimes results don't go our way but our confidence is there.

"The whole team wants to play every week and everyone wants the games to be on. We want to be involved and the guys coming off the bench want to play and show they should be starting."

And the 21-year-old says the defence can be the base for a successful Spring after impressive recent performances.

He said: "If we can't score we need to defend. We need to defend from the front and the front two, midfield four and back four must all work hard. If things aren't going our way then we have to defend as a team and not lose."
