Troy Deeney scored before being sent off as Walsall battled to a deserved point against high flying Charlton.

Deeney's 10th of the season put the Saddlers ahead before former Walsall loanee Deon Burton equalised from the penalty spot in first half stoppage time.

But the Saddlers striker was sent off with 13 minutes from time for a second bookable offence after felling Kyel Reid.

Manny Smith missed out with a hip problem for Walsall, with Netan Sansara returning, while Richard Taundry replaced Mark Bradley in midfield.

Rhys Weston limped out of the first 10 minutes, to be replaced by Darryl Westlake.

After an opening which saw both sides feeling each other out, the Saddlers took the lead on 32 minutes when Westlake swung in a cross for Deeney to expertly head past Rob Elliott.

But Charlton hit back in first-half injury time, when Jamie Vincent felled Therry Racon and Burton dispatched the penalty.

Akpo Sodje and Deeney traded half chances in the second period before Deeney saw red with 13 minutes remaining.

The striker tripped Reid and referee Andy Haines – who had booked Deeney for dissent in the first half – harshly dismissed the 21-year-old.

The sides traded chances from then on, but neither could break the deadlock.
