Chris Hutchings today insisted Alex Nicholls is part of his plans as interest hots up for the out-of-favour striker.

The 22-year-old hasn't started since the beginning of October and has played just 83 minutes since but has attracted interest from a Championship club and two League One outfits.

Nicholls spoke about the possibility of a loan move last month but Hutchings has told the hitman he must stay at the Banks's Stadium until told otherwise.

He said: "Whether I decide to let him out on loan is up to me. If I think he's more valuable to us at the club he'll stay here. It's as simple as that and he knows that.

"I've got to do what's right for this football club. Individuals might get the hump if they can't do this and that but I'm making sure this football club is run properly. If I say you're not going out on loan, you're not going out on loan."

But, despite interest, Hutchings says he hasn't received any bids for Nicholls or any of his stars.

"Right at this moment no one has made enquires about any of our players," he added.

Nicholls, who has scored twice this season, has fallen behind strike pair Darren Byfield and Troy Deeney, while Peter Till has been preferred on the right wing during Steve Jones' injury lay-off.

And Hutchings says he has been unlucky not to have played more.

He said: "I had a chat with Nics the other day, he's worked extremely hard and he's unfortunate after the way he's trained not to be in the starting XI.

"I know he can play wide right, it's alright for a little bit of a stop-gap, but he knows he's a striker."

But with eight games during February Hutchings says the former trainee needs to stay with the Saddlers.

Walsall face season defining games against the likes of Leeds, Charlton and Bristol Rovers and the boss needs everyone available.

"I've said to him he'll get a chance whether it's through suspension or injury," said Hutchings.

"He's a sensible lad and I've been very pleased with his attitude. He's a good professional and he's champing at the bit."
