Barry Ferguson's first Birmingham goal saved his club from an FA Cup exit after a lacklustre display against Nottingham Forest.

The midfielder curled home just after the hour to hand Blues a fourth round trip to Everton next Saturday.

But they were given a major scare by in-form Forest, who wasted their best chance when Nathan Tyson blazed over from six yards late on.

Alex McLeish named an unchanged XI from the side who claimed an impressive 1-1 draw with Manchester United on Saturday.

Forest made seven changes from the team who swept Albion aside 3-1 last Friday, as former Blues frontman Dele Adebola returned to St Andrew's.

But the visitors started confidently as Tyson guided a header wide just two minutes in.

David McGoldrick almost put Forest ahead on 38 minutes when Joe Hart smothered his effort, before the goalkeeper saved well from Tyson's 18-yard shot four minutes before the break.

It was business as usual in the second-half, as Adebola headed wide and Lewis McGugan fired a free-kick straight at Hart.

But Ferguson found the net on 62 minutes, before Forest missed a golden chance to equalise when Tyson missed from six yards 11 minutes from time.
